A few things that have inspired me lately and what I've been working on..
Cosmo Sheldrake with a big furry lollipop
🍃 This gorgeous track from Cosmo Sheldrake—brother of Merlin Sheldrake who wrote that fascinating book you’ve no doubt seen everywhere—stopped me in my tracks when I head it. I can’t stop listening.
🍃 This week I discovered the work of Russian animator Yuri Norstein and fell in love with his style after just a few seconds. His Hedgehog in the Fog is super creepy and the music is perfect. Here’s a documentary on YouTube about his life and work. The atmosphere he creates kinda reminds me of the game Limbo.
🍃 On the topic of beautiful animations, it’s about that time of the year when I watch Night on the Galactic Railroad again, which is not only an incredible film but is a huge inspiration on a lot of my music. Here it is in the original Japanese. Soundtrack by none other than the brilliant Haruomi Hosono.
🍃 I visited the British Library today to sign up as a reader. It’s a magnificent building with a bunch of beautiful and peaceful reading rooms where you can request books to read from their enormous catalogue. It’s not a lending library so you can only read in the designated rooms, but I felt that that makes the act of reading a lot more mindful. Today, I was thoroughly enjoying the The Forager’s Calendar by John Wright—which I decided to buy just after reading for a few minutes because it’s that good/informative/funny. It’s a month-by-month guide to the plant-life that you can find growing in the wild here in the UK. I’ve always been fascinated by people who can identify plants/mushrooms on-the-spot, and this book will help me pick up a bit of that knowledge. The book is graciously illustrated by British illustrator and printmaker Clare Wright.
🍃 Kind of related to above: how to become better at The Art of Noticing. A great article with tips on how to slow down and notice more. The idea here is that noticing more leads you to become a better writer, but I feel that noticing more will, for sure, lead to a richer and more fulfilling life.
Thank you for reading. Please subscribe if you’d like to read more. I only send out these inspiration roundups via email and I promise I won’t fill your inbox with yet another load of rubbish to delete.
Please let me know if any of these resonated with you.
